What is Endocrinology?
Clinical Endocrinology is the branch of medicine that helps diagnose and treat patients with problems related to hormones. This can include too much of one hormone, too little of another, or swellings within one of the glands that makes them. Diabetes is a subspeciality in endocrinology. High sugars in diabetes are due to imbalance in production or action of the hormone insulin.
What are hormones and what do they do?
Hormones are natural substances made by the body that act as chemical messengers, allowing different parts of the body to communicate with each other (very much like a wi-fi network) and so co-ordinate the body’s response to variety of changes. These range from stress and illness to changes in the weather and ageing.
As hormones co-ordinate the working of several different organs, any imbalance in its production or function can cause a wide range of symptoms and diseases.
The major endocrine glands and the conditions we treat are listed below,
- Thyroid disorders
- Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
- Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
- Goiter (enlarged thyroid)
- Thyroid nodules (lumps within the thyroid) & Thyroid cancer
- Thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid)
- Pituitary disorders
- Adrenal disorders
- Reproductive endocrinology
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome
- Male hormonal imbalances and sexual health problems
- Disorders related to Calcium and parathyroid disorders, Vitamin D and bone health (Osteoporosis)
