Lipoma & Cyst Guide

What is a Lipoma or a Skin Cyst?

A fatty lump (lipoma) is a soft, slow-growing lump of fat cells just under the skin. It usually feels rubbery, moves slightly when pressed and is usually not painful. Lipomas are very common and are usually harmless (benign).

A skin cyst (often called a sebaceous or epidermoid cyst) is a small sac under the skin filled with a thick, cheesy material. It may have a tiny dark opening on top and can become red, painful and swollen if it gets infected.

Many lumps do not need treatment, but they may be removed if they are growing, painful, infected, in an uncomfortable spot, or if the diagnosis needs to be confirmed. Your surgeon will examine the lump and advise whether removal is needed.

Get a lump checked if you notice

A Lump That Is Growing Pain or Tenderness Redness, Warmth or Discharge A Hard Lump That Does Not Move A Lump That Returns After Removal

At a Glance

Fatty lump (lipoma)

Soft, rubbery and usually not painful. Commonly found on the shoulders, back, neck, arms and thighs.

Skin cyst (sebaceous / epidermoid cyst)

A small sac under the skin, often with a tiny opening on top. It can become infected and swollen.

How it is diagnosed

Usually by examination. Your doctor may advise an ultrasound or other tests if the lump is large, deep or unusual.

After removal

The removed tissue is usually sent to a laboratory (histopathology) to confirm what it is.

Worth Knowing

Why You Should Get a Lump Checked

Most lipomas and skin cysts are harmless, but a lump should still be examined by a doctor. Here is why.

Confirming the Diagnosis

Not every lump is a lipoma or cyst. A doctor can tell whether further tests are needed.

Lumps Can Grow

A lump that keeps growing may need a bigger cut to remove later, and may press on nearby tissues.

Cysts Can Get Infected

An infected cyst can become red, painful and filled with pus (an abscess) and may need drainage.

Discomfort in Daily Life

Lumps on the back, shoulder or waist can rub against clothes, bags or belts and cause discomfort.

An evaluation by a surgeon can tell you what your condition needs and what to do next.

Common Types of Skin Lumps

Lumps under the skin can look alike. A surgeon can usually tell them apart with an examination, and sometimes a scan.

Treatment Options

Depending on the type, size and location of the lump, your surgeon may recommend one of the following. Your surgeon will explain which option suits you.

For Small, Unchanged Lumps

Monitoring

A small lipoma that is not painful or changing may simply be watched. Your doctor will tell you what changes to look out for.

Suitable only after a doctor has examined the lump
Report any growth, pain or hardening
Removal can be planned later if needed
Lipoma

Surgical Excision of Lipoma

The lump is removed through a cut in the skin over it. Many small lipomas are removed under local anaesthesia; larger or deeper ones may need regional or general anaesthesia.

Removes the lump completely
Wound is closed with stitches
Tissue is usually sent for lab examination
Anaesthesia type decided by your surgeon
Skin Cyst

Cyst Excision

The whole cyst, including its wall, is removed. Removing the complete wall helps lower the chance of the cyst coming back.

Usually done under local anaesthesia
Usually planned when the cyst is not inflamed
Wound is closed with stitches
Infected Cyst

Drainage & Treating Infection

If a cyst is infected, the surgeon may drain the pus and advise medicines. The cyst may be removed later once the infection settles.

Relieves pain and pressure
Dressings may be needed for some days
Planned removal may follow later

This information is general. The right treatment for you can only be decided by your surgeon after examining you.

Frequently Asked Questions

General answers to common questions. Your surgeon will advise on your specific lump.

Important - Please Read

No. Many lumps under the skin are lipomas or cysts, which are usually harmless, but other conditions can look similar. A lump that is growing quickly, is hard, painful or fixed in place should be checked by a doctor without delay.

Not always. Small lipomas that are not painful or changing are often left alone. Removal may be advised if the lump is growing, painful, in an uncomfortable spot, or if the diagnosis needs to be confirmed. Your surgeon will advise you.

The cost depends on the size, number and location of the lumps, the type of anaesthesia and your insurance cover. Share your details and our team will call you back within 30 minutes with a free cost estimate.

Coverage depends on your policy and whether the procedure is medically necessary - our team checks this for you. Vasavi Hospitals accepts all insurance and provides cashless admission guidance where applicable.

Many small lumps are removed under local anaesthesia. Larger, deeper or multiple lumps may need regional or general anaesthesia. Your surgeon and anaesthetist will decide what is suitable for you.

It is uncommon when the lump is removed completely, but it can happen. A cyst is more likely to return if part of its wall is left behind. New lipomas can also appear in other places.

No, it is better not to. Squeezing a cyst can push the contents deeper, cause infection and make later removal more difficult. See a doctor if a cyst is bothering you.
